Chop Block

Hickory Cutting board With Chop Cutters

Research

There are so many different tools that have been used in kitchens for years. After interviewing a few experienced chefs, I discovered that the most necessary kitchen items are knives and a cutting board.

Why not combine them to make cooking more streamlined?

Inspiration

Dansk Cheeseboard & Knife

By Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs

I used this product as inspiration to create a multifunctional item.

Construction

  • Stainless steel cutter with steel epoxied on for magnetism.

  • Cutter was epoxied and nailed into the wooden handle and covered by a wooden down to be seamless.

  • The board was split in half to embed the magnets and to router slits for the cutters.

How does it work?

Inside the cutting board are 6 neodymium magnets on each end. These magnets allow you to click the two knives into place and let the user hold the board by these handles.

Learning Outcomes

I looked at different types of wood and their qualities. I choose hickory for its beautiful grain and strength. I used stainless steel for the blades because it's food safe and more rust resistant. I used a strip of steel for magneticity inside the board.
